A preparation technique for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the luminal surface of the intestinal mucosa was developed, with the objective of preserving the delicate interface between the microbial flora and the mucosal surface. The technique allows observation of the bacterial polysaccharide filaments and the structural features of the intestinal epithelium.
