Danny Gourley Fischer, the first in his family to go to college, grew up in an area “where cotton is king and education is pretty low on the list of needs.” He was aware of the transformative possibilities of education from an early age. “I just knew early on that education was going to be an avenue of escaping poverty for me,” said Fischer, now Director of the Center for Adult Learners and Veterans at the University of West Georgia.
