Looking back on his 28‐year career in higher education, James Davidson “Dusty” Porter, Ph.D., recalls the unexpected challenges he encountered while working at a private, tuition‐dependent college during the 2008 recession. “I remember very clearly the challenge of trying to determine, with the president's Cabinet, how we were going to stay afloat without eliminating jobs,” he said. “I have a memory of thinking ‘No one ever shared in my graduate preparation program how much time I would be spending on budgets and understanding fiscal operations.’”
