Most student affairs professionals start their careers believing they can help every single student succeed. That was certainly the case for Kathryn (Kate) Mueller, Ed.D., vice president of student services at Coastline Community College. But somewhere along her 34‐year higher ed career, she had to accept that “we can indeed help the majority of students whom we serve, but there will be a handful in our careers where we have to pause and acknowledge that either as individuals or as an institution we cannot provide the necessary support to help that student succeed.”
