Governing boards have an influence on college‐student success and play a critical role in the shared governance structure in higher education. But student affairs professionals sometimes find it difficult to approach governing board members because of public scrutiny and political or conflicting interests. For example, board members (also known as trustees) often have a dual role as donors to the institution and often don't reflect the make‐up of the campuses they serve. To overcome these challenges, student affairs professionals need to develop a better understanding of board priorities and plan more strategic interactions that will allow for collaborative efforts toward student success.
