Satellite communication systems are providing a wide variety of services to all regions of the world. In the beginning, satellite communications were only used for intercontinental trunk telephony services with very high availability requirements and later for TV-broadcasting with a signi"cantly lower connection requirement. Today, packet-oriented multimedia services, which cater to "xed and mobile users, have quality and availability speci"cations that are tailored to the user needs, allowing satellites to be #exible and competitive. One essential element in the optimization of satellite communication services is the knowledge of propagation characteristics of a particular link.
