SUMMARY The low‐latency extension was introduced in DVB‐SH (digital video broadcast‐satellite to handheld) to permit the transmission of latency‐sensitive data in S‐band Mobile Interactive Multimedia (S‐MIM) such as signaling and acknowledgements alongside the latency‐insensitive data such as broadcast streams. This enables existing receivers to still receive the latency‐insensitive data. This compatibility to existing receivers was achieved by exploiting a periodicity in the interleaved data.
