A high gain observer based on a triangular structure of nonlinear systems is proposed. An algorithm capable of calculating a gain of the observer is given. This observer synthesis is then extended to a class of multi‐output nonlinear systems which contains the model of binary distillation columns. Finally, we illustrate the performance of the estimator using numerical simulations of a methanol–ethanol distillation column. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
