It is shown that some of the general coupled electromagnetic modes in a large dielectric cylinder are of a whispering‐gallery type. These have the property that their energy is mainly confined to the region near the boundary. When the axial wave number h is greater than the external wave number k 2 , these modes are shown to be unattenuated. However, if h is less than k 2 the modes are leaky. Approximate expressions are derived for the circumferential phase velocity of these spiraling‐type whispering gallery modes.
