The process by which cationized oligomers of poly(ethylene glycol) dodecyl ether [CH 3 (CH 2 ) 11 (OCH 2 CH 2 ) n OH, n = 1–8] are formed in matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry was investigated. The observed relative intensities of molecules cationized by Li + ,Na + , or K + were analyzed using a one‐dimensional random walk model, assuming metal ion migration in the ethylene glycol chain of the oligomer and loss from the chain as the result of lack of sufficient coordination sites at the chain ends.
