N + ions were stored in a home‐made ion trap. The apparatus allows the systematic characterization of ion motion in the presence of anharmonicities due to geometric defects, or to a smaller degree, due to the space charge. Enrichment of the spectrum of the motion frequencies and drastic reduction of the storage capability occur due to radial‐axial couplings. The paper presents experimental observations of these effects.
