Experimental data on collision‐induced dissociation of stored gold cluster ions have been interpreted and binding energies have been calculated for small gold clusters Au n ( n = 2–5). On the basis of experimental results on the collision‐induced dissociation and photodissociation of gold clusters and the known binding energies for neutral gold dimer and trimer the atomization energy of gold pentamer Au 5 has been obtained as 8.7±0.3 eV.
