The condensed‐phase Baker Venkataraman rearrangement is an irreversible reaction, e.g. o ‐( − CH 2 CO)C 6 H 4 OCOPh → o ‐( − O)C 6 H 4 COCH 2 COPh. The collision‐induced mass spectra of these two ions show the corresponding gas‐phase reaction to be reversible.
