The National Centre, set up by the Science and Engineering Reasearch Council in 1985, currently services the specialist mass spectrometry requirements of over 140 chemistry research teams, covering most of the British universities and carrying out about 9500 analyses each year, using mainly soft‐ionization techniques. Its work has featured in 1276 publilcatons during the past three years and the Centre has become invaluable to the progress of many research teams in Britain.
