The low‐ mass cut‐off in ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is significantly improved by employing a sawtooth driving function on the ring electrode in place of the usual sinusoidal AC potential. The theory is explained with examples involving both the ‘tickle’ and ‘boundary‐effect’ MS/MS methods.
