The mass spectrometric behaviour of more than 60 different macrocyclic compounds is reviewed in detail with the aim of depicting general fragmentation pathways, well‐related to the different structural classes. In general, the electron‐ionization‐induced decomposition is characterized by the ejection of single molecules characteristic of the macrocycle. [M + H] + and [M/2 + H] + ions are always encountered due to the intrinsic basicity of such molecules.
