The performance of a novel array detector system which can be operated during scanning of the magnetic field of a sector mass spectrometer is investigated. The increase in sensitivity as compared to a standard secondary‐electron multiplier slit detector is about 100 times. It is shown that the product of the mass window of the array detector and the resolution is constant. The maximum resolution which can be achieved with the array detector is 7500 full width at half maximum. The solid secondary‐ion mass spectrum of 12 attomol of gramicidin S demonstrates the extreme sensitivity of the system.
