Collisional activation of MeSOCH   2 −and PhCH 2 SOC̄HPh (but not PhSOCH   2 − ) yields an ion of m/z 49, identified as HOS − . It is proposed that this ion is formed following proton transfer to oxygen followed by cyclization and elimination.
