Fundamental properties of both homogeneous and inhomogeneous many‐electron systems are reviewed with particular reference to the problem of obtaining the nonlocal exchange‐correlation contribution, E xc [ n ], to the ground state energy. Attention is drawn to the important differences which exist between macroscopic bulk systems in the thermodynamic limit and microscopic systems such as atoms or molecules and the consequent implications for the structure of E xc [ n ].
