This article serves as an introduction to a panel discussion on the subject “Models of Carcinogenesis” at the 1986 Sanibel Symposium on Quantum Biology and Quantum Pharmacology, and it gives a brief review of some of the current models. After listening to the various presentations expressing quite diversified views as to the cause of carcinogenesis at the 1977 Sanibel Symposium, I wrote a similar review [1] and emphasized that some models seem more probable than the others. The development during the years has shown, however, that cancer is such a multifaceted disease that almost all of the models discussed have turned out to have some relevance.
