Current understanding of critical behavior in bulk fluids and fluid mixtures is surveyed concisely. The shifts in critical point and changes of the critical behavior in films, or produced by confinement between parallel plates or walls, are considered on the basis of scaling principles and phenomenological and lattice gas calculations, with emphasis on behavior arising when the walls preferentially adsorb a particular chemical species.
