The H 2 O and D 2 O sorption isotherms have been measured for lysozyme powders, as well as the extent of the deuterium‐hydrogen exchange as a function of D 2 O partial pressure. D 2 O appears to bind more strongly to lysozyme than H 2 O. There is a significant reduction in the steady‐state conductivity of lysozyme when sorbed water molecules are replaced by the same number of sorbed D 2 O molecules. This effect is taken as strong evidence that the dominant conduction process in lysozyme powder involves the transport of protons.
