A review of the theory of magnetic polarons is given paying special attention to polarons in broad band ferromagnetic semiconductors such as some europium‐chalcogenides. The self‐consistent equations for the polaron energy and the nonuniform spin polarization around the polaron are derived in a general form from which most of the earlier treatments can be deduced as special cases. The free and bound magnetic polaron formations, stability ranges, and band width effefin the HOLE OEMPERATURE RANGE/ The formation of molecular magnetic polarons and the instability of the homogeneous state are discussed. The relation of the magnetic polarons to the magnetic a aniform spin nd electrical properties of magnetic semiconductors is discussed and the experimental evidence for magnetic polarons is summarized.
