Third‐harmonic generation and intensity‐dependent refractive index of atomic hydrogen

Expressions for the third‐harmonic generation and intensity‐dependent refractive index are derived in terms of perturbed functions based on the hydrodynamic analogy to quantum mechanics. Using linear variational trial functions, the functionals associated with the perturbed functions are solved for atomic hydrogen. The nonlinear susceptibilities are evaluated for both real and imaginary frequencies.
