The correlation of photoelectron (PE) spectra of amino acids and their methyl esters shows that the gas‐phase electronic structure of the acid can be deduced from results for its ester. Such a procedure is also supported by comparison of PE spectra of carboxylic acids and their methyl (and ethyl) esters. The results indicate that amino acids and free esters in the gas phase appear in their molecular form.
