The origin of a reproducing protocell is interpreted, on the basis of experiments performed under geophysically relevant conditions, as a sequentially consistent ab initio development of appropriate matter. Progress in conceptualization of the development of a contemporary cell from a protocell is reviewed. The central forces in this evolution appear to be stereochemical rather than statistical. The value of recognizing the cell and protocell as quanta, in such studies, is explained.
