The present status of the inversion of molecular scattering data is reviewed with particular emphasis on the importance of the rapid quantal undulations. It is concluded that the semiclassical approximation may provide valuable guidelines for localized distortions in the phase–shift curve, but that the full quantum treatment is required for quantitative accuracy. The extension of the inversion techniques to the two–potential problem is also briefly discussed.
