A method of determining the effective pair potentials of the inert gases by the use of melting data is discussed. The Lindemann criterion for melting is assumed. For any given pair potential the theoretical melting curve may be evaluated. Direct comparison of the theoretical curves with experimental data enables the “best” potential to be selected.
