In a random phase approximation the collective excitations are calculated over the whole temperature range. Starting from a quite general interaction between protons, it turns out that beside the well‐known dipole–dipole interactions a cooperative tunneling term is important, at least at low temperatures. The bandwidth of the excitations is discussed as a function of temperature. In the appendix formulas are given for the effect of an applied electric field.
