Atoms, being quantum objects, can have their boundary surfaces defined in a number of ways. On page 504, Hiroo Nozaki, Kazuhide Ichikawa, and Akitomo Tachibana take quantum field theory into consideration by analyzing the first, second, and third rows of the periodic table using the electronic kinetic energy density and stress tensor density. The stress tensor, which describes the pattern of internal forces of matter, is used to characterize the electronic structure of atoms. (DOI: 10.1002/qua.25073 )
