A new method of a theoretical description of the electronic hot bands is proposed. The method has been derived from the ideas of statistical spectroscopy. The reliability of the method has been tested on the spectrum of the hydrogen molecule generated by a model potential and by a numerically solvable potential. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
