On the basis of the arrangement symmetry for the system of identical particles the universal Hamiltonian of the exchange interaction in the spin representation is developed. For the case of spin‐1/2 particles the obtained Hamiltonian is equivalent to the Heisenberg form. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2007
