A new simple proof of the Jahn–Teller theorem for molecular systems is presented. The proof is based on some general properties of symmetric square representation characters that simplify their explicit treatment and minimize the use of tables. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2007
