In this article, the reflection and transmission of plane waves are examined from “ negative imaginary ” ( NIP ) and “ true complex ” absorbing potentials ( CAP ). Comparisons have been made between these two types of potentials using our multistep potential method. The results showed that, except for a few cases, the CAPs give significantly better values for the absorption than those given by the NIPs. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2003
