We develop canonical perturbation theory for classical mechanics by means of the Lie method in a simple way that does not require the use of complex variables to solve the perturbation equations. In order to illustrate the approach we apply it to anharmonic oscillators. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2001
