This paper examines the degradation behaviour of spectral characteristics, such as spectral line‐width and FM response, in a 1·55 μm highly coherent multiple quantum well (MQW) DFB laser with a long‐cavity. The possibility of long‐life MQW DFB lasers for use in optical coherent transmission systems is demonstrated by clarifying the degradation behaviours.
