The design of components is examined from the standpoint of optimizing production yield and quality rather than electrical performance and unit cost. General observations are made on the compromises which must be made between these criteria, and they are illustrated by considering two specific types of well‐established ceramic capacitor. It is demonstrated that appropriate electrical design changes can produce significant improvements in production yield which more than offset the resulting small increases in material and fabrication costs.
