The reliability of complex communications satellites is discussed as well as the elements necessary to ensure the specified life. Some of these elements are novel to commercial communications satellites, and generally are found only in military satellites having very exacting reliability requirements. Also treated are some of the changes that have been implemented within the last decade to enhance reliability and increase the life of space communications satellites.
