It is shown that the sufficient stability criteria given by P. Ripa in 1983 for zonal shallow‐water flow on the sphere may be extended to include zonally symmetric orography (free surface height being replaced in the relevant expressions by depth). The context of the study is the use of stable flows to test the formulation of discretized numerical models; illustrative examples of how to apply the criteria in this context are presented. © Crown Copyright 2009.
