A new method is proposed that computes the sensitivity to potential vorticity of any diagnosed aspect of the atmosphere. It does not require the computation of the adjoint of the full inversion procedure, but rather the tangent linear and the adjoint of the operator that relates the wind and mass fields to the distribution of potential vorticity. The formal approach employed helps in understanding the role of the balance condition. This method is applied to the study of the sensitivity of the boundary condition to the inner potential vorticity in a 2D atmosphere.
