A multi‐level limited‐area model based on the slow equations is formulated, and applied to the problem of initializing data for a primitive‐equation forecast. the slow equations comprise a filtered system whose linear solutions correspond to the low‐frequency atmospheric motions. There are no solutions corresponding to the high‐frequency gravity‐wave solutions of the primitive equations. The model is used to initialize data for a primitive‐equation forecast. It is successful in eliminating high‐frequency noise without causing any significant changes in the forecast. the method converges well even when all vertical modes are initialized.
