One of the main characteristics of the climatic system is the existence of numerous feedback and jump phenomena. It is suggested that a discontinuous formulation based on Boolean logic can be fruitfully used to analyse this behaviour. The approach is first applied to simple examples, and the logical predictions are compared with the results of the more familiar continuous formalism. The qualitative insights that such an analysis can add are then illustrated on more complex situations.
