The upward leakage of wave energy from a two‐layer troposphere into the stratosphere is examined; the changes produced in the natural complex modes of the system by altering the parameters are found to give rise to some quasi‐resonance phenomena. Under special circumstances there may exist modes which decay extremely rapidly downstream and these provide a qualitative explanation for some features of observed flows.
