Abstract We develop a criterion for estimating the conditions under which two polydisperse hazes will give identical scattering of light in the single scattering approximation. This criterion, that equivalent hazes have the one value of the parameter p 2 = R 8 / R 6 , is derived from the Rayleigh‐Gans approximation to small angle scattering. We find that it is well satisfied by hazes which have been found to give identical scattering.
