A method is presented for estimating mean ground‐level pressure over most of the Northern Hemisphere using objectively analysed fields of 1,000 mb and 500 mb height together with suitable grid‐point values of mean topographic height. A limited sample of data indicates that estimates of the seasonal transfer of mass between the Hemispheres using fields of mean sea‐level pressure are too large by a factor of about 4.
