Abstract Stability criteria of charged drops levitated by uniform electric fields are determined by assuming that the drops possess spheroidal equilibrium shapes and that the equations of equilibrium are satisfied at the two poles and the equator. The stability criteria were also determined by the more precise method prescribed by Brazier‐Smith (1971). Comparison of the results of the two methods indicates that the spheroidal assumption, which was applied with considerable success to study the stability of uncharged drops, cannot be applied to cases in which the drops are charged.
