An analysis is carried out of samples of time series of observations of wind components of the winter sub‐tropical and summer easterly jet streams in the Middle East. The periods covered by the samples are 60 days. Individual components showed peaks in the eddy kinetic energy with minimum periods of about 4 days. However, when both u and v components are combined or two separate 60 day samples are combined marked peaks diminish. There is probably a spectrum of preferred peak periods which can only be identified if a much larger population of individual series is analysed.
