The effect of the finite width of the wavelength bands passed by spectrophotometers used to measure the total ozone overhead is discussed. For a Dobson spectrophotometer the effect is negligible. For a spectro‐photometer with wide slits, designed for use on a star, the effect is significant. For a filter instrument the effect is so large as to represent a serious obstacle to the use of the instrument, particularly if allowance is made for the effects of haze.
