The limitations on the conditions necessary for Taylor columns to exist in a compressible atmosphere are discussed. It is pointed out that the effect of baroclinicity precludes the existence of Taylor columns in the terrestrial atmosphere. The conditions in Jupiter's atmosphere are considered and it is shown that because of the effects of stratification and of baroclinicity Taylor columns can exist in Jupiter's atmosphere only under rather special conditions.
