Recently produced daily 5‐mb maps of the whole Northern Hemisphere for the first quarter of 1966 have revealed differences between the middle and upper stratospheric circulation – at least during certain periods over certain regions. Stratospheric midwinter warmings at the 5‐mb level (35 km) are compared with the circulation at the 10‐mb level (30 km) and material is presented showing that major warmings occur in the upper stratosphere without being noticed at the 10‐mb level–the highest level reached regularly by radiosondes. The need for the exploration of the levels between 30 and 60 km with higher‐reaching radiosondes and more rocketsonde data is emphasized.
